Ahrefs Features in 2026: What's Available and What It Means for Your SEO

An overview of Ahrefs features worth knowing about in 2026, including keyword clustering in Keywords Explorer, AI-assisted research and the free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, and whether they justify upgrading.

How to judge a new feature before paying for it

  1. Which plan has it?New features often launch on higher tiers.
  2. Does it replace a tool?Only then can it save money.
  3. Try it on real workDuring a trial or refund window, if offered.
A feature announcement changes value only if it is on the plan you would buy and replaces something you pay for.

If you’re deciding whether to start with Ahrefs or move up a plan, it helps to know which features are on offer and which ones need a paid subscription. This overview sticks to what Ahrefs describes on its own product pages. We could not confirm from Ahrefs’ changelog when each feature first launched, so treat this as a guide to what’s available rather than a launch announcement.

Keyword Clustering in Keywords Explorer

Ahrefs’ Keywords Explorer page says you can cluster keywords by Parent Topic or by related terms. Grouping related keywords this way is useful for content planning: instead of working through a long list of near-duplicates, you see which keywords belong on the same page and which deserve their own.

Semrush also offers keyword grouping, so this is less a reason to switch suites than a reason to use the feature if you already pay for Ahrefs.

AI Features: Useful or Gimmick?

The same Keywords Explorer page describes AI-assisted seed keyword ideas (“just enter a topic”) and AI analysis of the SERP to describe the search intent behind a keyword. Ahrefs also lists a separate AI Content Helper product for grading a draft against competing pages.

Our view: AI summaries of search intent and keyword ideas are a reasonable starting point, but they are not a substitute for opening the ranking pages and reading them yourself, especially on complex topics.

The Free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free and covers your own verified websites. According to Ahrefs, it includes Site Audit, Site Explorer (including the keywords your site ranks for in Google) and Web Analytics. Keywords Explorer is not part of the free offering, and analysing competitors’ (unverified) websites requires a paid subscription.

For budget-conscious site owners, that makes it a sensible first step: you can see your own keyword rankings and technical issues without paying anything.

Pricing

Ahrefs’ plan prices and limits change over time, so we don’t quote them in this article. Check the plan table on our Ahrefs pricing page for the current price and the date it was checked, and compare it with our Semrush page if you’re choosing between the two. In practice the decision usually comes down to workflow preference as much as price.

Should You Upgrade?

If you’re on an entry plan and doing regular competitor keyword research, check whether your plan includes the Keywords Explorer features you need, such as clustering, before deciding to move up. If you mainly use Ahrefs for backlink analysis, which is the core of the product, your current plan may still be the right fit.

For new users, the free Webmaster Tools are the easiest way to start working with Ahrefs data on your own site before committing to a subscription.
